Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition based on the South Korean drama Squid Game, where 456 contestants compete for a $4.56 million prize. Our company designed the lower-third graphics to introduce each competitor.

Lower-Thirds

Our lower-thirds display the competitor's name, number, and hometown. We created a seamless animation to transition smoothly between this information.

Batch Task

With so many competitors, I needed an efficient workflow to batch-create lower-thirds.
My goals were to: using Google Sheets / smooth transitions / organic randomization

▲ I broke down each alphabet into a small animation. Each letter starts as a cube, travels with a trailing motion, and ends as a cube.

▲ This allows us to create every possible combination between letters, with the cube traveling to the corresponding position.

Kerning Issue

When typing words on a computer, the gap between characters is automatically adjusted based on the letters before and after. However, this doesn’t work with our customized system.

▲ To solve this, I used the AE expression sourceRectAtTime to access the kerning of default words. The result was satisfying, as it allowed for precise control over the spacing.

The Script

With all the issues resolved, we connected Google Sheets to our AE script, allowing us to create animations with just one click.
This streamlined the process, enabling me to generate 100+ lower-thirds in under 5 minutes.
